Curiosity 5star 21
Curiosity is about a boy named Rufus and a machine called the Turk. The Turk is a chess playing machine that competes other players. Rufus is offered the job to operate the Turk. The only people who knows someone’s operating the Turk is Rufus, Jacques, Mulhouse, and Maelzel. The plot is very detailed and explained throughout the story. Rufus is going through hard times and that is well expressed. For example when Maelzel gets mad at Rufus he starts kicking Rufus and Jaques stops Maelzel. The solution is great but sad. It ends with Rufus finding his mom but that wasn’t necessary and the Turk burns. The charecters are VERY well explained and give emotion as if you were there. This is why I like this book so much and if you read it you will to

Curiosity by Gary Blackwood is a simply phenomenal novel. The plot language was captivating and kept me interested the whole time. For example, “It wasn’t until I twisted my ankle on uneven cobbles and felt a jolt of pain that I realized it was no dream.” The concept of the book was really original and fresh. Just the notion of a chess prodigy operating the Turk is out of this world. The setting was mostly relevant, but when the setting changed to Richmond it got irrelevant from that point on. Many characters were well developed and are still stuck in my head. Rufus was a very unique character that resembles me. We both enjoy a game of chess(although I’m not very good at it), we are both stubborn and can be a pain. Maezel was strict and kept the story flowing. Jaques was another character I remember because of his kindness towards Rufus. Some characters such as Virginia, Mr. Poe and were forgettable although they played a pretty major role. The way it was organized helped the story flow ,and I was not confused at all. This book is still amazing and it was a real shot at winning the John Newberry Award.
I was confused too I think all the French words where confusing
The French where confusing but maybe they were meant to not be understood.
I agree because the text allways gave an interesting grabber lead at pulled you in.

In the book Curiosity by Gary Blackwood Rufus is a homeless boy. His dad is in jail and he lost his mom. Rufus is a very good chess player. This makes this book different and one of a kind. He meets a man how pays him to work a machine. The machine’s name is the Turk. The machine plays chess and Rufus thought it wouldn’t be too hard. He went into a box and had the machine play chess. I thought the setting was really good. For example, when Rufus is in the Turk it talks about what he sees. It says how he sees the candle burning. Things like those really help me visualize it. After some time Rufus moves to a new town. He is also really sad because his dad died. Rufus meets a new friend. His friend ends up betraying him. Everyone was supposed to think the machine ran by its self. She snuck into a room and saw Rufus working the Turk. I liked the part when it started to describe his friend. It says she has white gloves and a nice dress. This made me think about people I meet a long time ago. When I was little I had a friend betray me. The plot and language was really good. I liked the way it nicely went together. I gave 4 ½ stars because very rarely was it confusing. Over all it was a good book.

My name is Adam. I’m going to tell you what happened in curiosity. Frist, Rufus (the main character) finds out that he is really good at chess, and that his dad has to go to jail. Rufus starts a job to get money for his dad in jail. What he does is operate the Turk a machine that does chess. His boss was not good. He did not pay Rufus until shortly after, and he beat him. Later, his father died. Rufus went to Virginia to work some more because the crow was bigger. He met a girl that he loved, but betrayed him because she wanted to know the Turks secret. He got fired, and went back to Pennsylvania. He found his lost mother, and he lived with her. The reason I put 4 ½ is because I got bored during his job. I gave it 23 on the rubric for the same reason.
Adam I argee.

I thought after reading Curiosity I was going to cry, it was a really great book and I loved it. It reminded me of the movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame, because the main character, Rufus, is a hunchback. It also reminded me of the book The Inventions of Hugo Cabot, because both books are about automation and clockwork. And as a connection and an important event, Rufus’ father died just like Hugo’s. Also another important event is that Rufus’ mom’s alive, and I think this important because if she wasn’t alive that would mean Rufus is an orphan and that would change a lot of things. Then finally my last important event is when Rufus meets Mulhouse, an adult who invited Rufus to his job. I think this is an important event because if Rufus hadn’t got that job he would have been an orphan at the House of Refuge and have to stay there forever until his mom comes. He also wouldn’t have met Virginia, Mr. Poe, Jacques, or even Mrs. Fisher who was actually Rufus’ mom. Also I rated this book 24/24 because thought all of the categories for four points were amazingly showing. Like the characters, they were really life like and memorable. And the organization, I could have really understood how Rufus felt and experienced. Then the interest, the book was a great interest for me and I bet it would to for others who read it. For one last thing the plot language, the book did include incredible language which really engaged me and it made me have a hard time to put down the book. Also the reason I gave the book 5 stars is because it was funny, sad, and happy mixed together making a great book.
Curiosity was a good book it is about this boy named Rufus. His dad went to jail for being crazy. Rufus has no family other than his dad. He tries to find a job and gets recruited to secretly operate a mechanical chess player called the Turk. He can’t tell anyone because everyone is supposed to it is mechanical. He needs to free his dad so he takes the job for money. He was playing someone and then someone pulled a prank and yelled “FIRE” to see if anyone came out but Rufus stayed in there and waited for the all clear sign. One day he was working on the Turk and his co-worker Jacques made a leg brace instead of working on the Turk. Everyone knows he works for the owner of the Turk so they ask him questions. His dad dies from a disease and he was sad do he told Jacques we can move to Richmond to do the show. I don’t want to say the rest but I thought Curiosity was a good book because it was about chess and I love chess myself. I put four stars because some of the words I didn’t know like “I spied neither the Woman in Black nor the Venus of Richmond.
Curiosity 22/24 Four stars
Curiosity was a very juicy book with lots of detail and description. I think the organization was great! The reason I think this is because it was all about Rufus it was directed on Rufus that way I knew what character was speaking. The setting was not the main part but was still detailed like “The stench was of dank dust. “The characters were easy to remember because there were few of them. Throughout the story you learned more about the characters. The story was somewhat original with a mixture of everything.

Over all, I rate Curosity 3 stars and 20 points out of 24 points. I was kind of interested in the book because it had a good plot to it and I was a little confused on all the little parts in the book I think that Gary Blackwood should have only focused on one big problem and not all those little problems. Even though I was a little confused I thought that the story was very original because not that many books that I read really go into really deep details about the settings and about the characters. I honestly could see all the characters and all the settings in my head. I thought Gary Blackwood did a good job and I recommend you read it.
CURIOSITY ***** 5 stars 22/24
Curiosity was one of the greatest books I have ever read. Details were very accurate. I could imagine this as a real life situation. And how awesome it would be. Its not really organized with a plot and a subplot and another. Its really more of those straightforward books. But interest was like a monkey and a banana. Its like a drama /mystery/action kind of book. Once I read something I had to know what was next until I finished. Setting was just like organization. Pretty straightforward. Throughout the main characters life its pretty much one place then the next. I was honestly confused with the characters. How did he get the names, how did he find a way to add in a lot of characters. This all really confused me. And originality was perfect. I have never read something close to this. I still cannot figure out how he got the idea for this.
I agree with you. you said it was original and you where right. the excitement wasn't very good because he was mostly in one room.

I read the book Curiosity by. I gave it three stars. The plot language didn’t engage me. I was often confused and thrown off track because of its lack of organization. It was slow and not much happened until Rufruss friend betrayed him. Never less, the setting was well described. I can visualize the small cramped room inside the Turk. The characters where well described too. From the story I can tell that Rufruss is stubborn , smart and curious. This book was very original. I think this because the twist when Ms.Fisher turns out to be his mother is what makes it orginal

I just read Curiosity. It’s about a boy named Rufus. I think the story was kind of sad because he lost his mom and his dad went to jail. I think the setting of the story was well shown .I could picture where Rufus was. The interest of this book was awesome!!! The first page of the book had me hooked. This book also had slight originality because it had its own genre. That’s why I gave this book ****.

I think that Curiosity is a fantastic book x2 .I was so sad through the whole book, but it all changes at the end. In this book characters are essential and Garry Blackwood did a good job with that. With so many characters to mr.poe ,Fiona, lily, malzel, mullhouse ,Jaques, and of course,Rufus, and I’m not even in the middle of the list! Then comes organization. Which was also in this book! So it’s not jumpig from chess to malzel’s mistreating Rufus (which was in Brown Girl Dreaming).Another important part is details in my eyes its long words ,but they are really descriptive words. Some are 14 letters long.Ok lets get back on topic here. You can also compare it by Bud not Buddy cause there both alone, they don’t have moms ,and more. And those are some reasons Curiosity is a good book
