Very well stated! I think Ephraim's question about the unbelievable guided the text. The kids wanted to find the cure for their father which was their encouragement to continue to look for the Fountain of Youth.

A family’s dad had a stroke and they moved to Crystal Springs.Crystal Springs had water that could cure people.Dr. Appledoor made a huge Water Castle and made many confusing tunnels.Ephriam was looking for the fountain of youth to cure his dad.Several explorers have looked for the fountain of youth but never found it.I liked it at the end SO MUCH because of the very happy ending. At the end his father completely recovered. At first, his dad couldn’t walk, talk,or understand things. At the end,he waved to his dad while his dad was looking out the window and his dad waved back. That wasn’t my favorite part but it was very hard to put the book down when Will got stabbed in the leg by a huge piece of wood!It was a good book and I rated it five stars and twenty four points.I LOVED THE BOOK!

I rate this book with 3 stars because it didn’t give a good detail on the Water Castle or the characters unless a big castle is an option for “good detail”. I rate the book with 17 points because most of the story is hard to understand with the bad description of the characters like Ephraim thought she had pretty eyes dark as a walnut on pg. 39. I can’t believe that Brynn’s dad never started walking again. Most stories end better. The story kind of has a good ending because the father could still move but couldn’t walk. He had to be in a wheelchair and have someone push him. One of my favorite parts was when they went inside the Water Castle. They played around and enjoyed looking at the whole place, but what made it confusing was that they went downstairs and ended up UPSTAIRS!!! Doesn’t that seem confusing to you? It does to me. This book is a long read because before the halfway point it is confusing to me. The book is really complex because there are so many settings to remember. I feel sorry for Will because he fainted and he was on the stairs and he would fall all the way down.

And I think it shouldn't get the Newberry Award because it never gave you specific detail from the Water Castle. The plot language was horrible in fact, i don't think it had any at all!

Star rating: 1 ½ stars Rating from rubric: 13 Water Castle is a book about a boy named Ephraim, a boy who is radioactive and seen real Fountain of Youth water. Ephraim meets a boy named Will, the son of Ephraim’s family enemy. Ephraim tries to become friends with Will until Ephraim finds secret tunnels and a lab. Will tries to stop Ephraim from searching anymore. I think that the book is too confusing and not interesting because it constantly goes to these flashbacks in the middle of the story. You have to understand both stories in one book and once you get interested the book is nearly over. Things were never explained like what did Dr. Appledore mean by burning the water? The book just felt incomplete. I don’t think this book should get the Newberry award.

Very well written! I love the text evidence that you used to describe The Water Castle. I have to agree that the flashbacks were a bit confusing. The flashbacks added additional characters which made it difficult to follow. Overall, I thought The Water Castle was a good book.

I think that the Water Castle should get the Mock Newberry award. Because it has good language! For example Ephraim described the Water Castle on pg.9 ‘Ivy ran up the walls of the building and dripped down over the doorway, a round stone outcropping that protected the wooden door.’ Wow! I also think that the flashbacks help the story flow better. For instant I could infer that Nora was in Mallory’s family later in book and that Nora was the girl in the old picture. This why I think it should earn the award!
