Skype visit with Barbara O'Connor

Today the students had a fantastic visit with Barbara O'Connor. Like other Skype visits this visit was the culminating activity for their book club. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students read How to Steal a Dog and the Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester. They also visited Barbara's website to become more familiar with her and her other books.

Feb. 15
Skype visit with Wendy Mass

We had a wonderful Skype visit with Wendy Mass today. The students (about 30) were able to ask her questions about many of her books. Since Wendy has written so many books the questions bounced from 11 Birthdays, Finally 12, 13 Gifts, Candymakers, Every Soul a Star, and Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life.

Skype visit with Jeanne DuPrau
Fourth grade book club and a book club from Ms. Haile's class had the opportunity to talk to Jeanne DuPrau. She is the author of several books including the City of Ember. Fourth grade students chatted with her about the City of Ember. During the visit they discussed the character development, plot choices and her writing process.

Skype visit with Kate Messner

Second graders concluded their book study on Marty McGuire with a visit from Kate Messner. Although there were a couple of technical glitches the visit was wonderful. They loved being able to meet the author and talk to her about Marty. They also were excited to hear a new Marty book will be out in a year.

Skype visit with Betty Birney

Third and fourth grade students had a chance to meet with Betty Birney after reading the Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs and School Days According to Humphrey. Students were excited to hear about her other Humphrey books and the stories behind Sassafras Springs including some of the wood figures carved by her father.

Nov. 30
Skype visit with Rob Buyea
Today my 5th grade book club and Ms. Pritchard's 4th grade class had the pleasure of Skyping with Rob Buyea, author of Because of Mr. Terupt. The students prepared by writing questions ahead of time and to ask Mr. Buyea. Mr. Buyea was engaging and funny and we learned a lot about the characters and why Mr. Buyea became an author.

Preparing for Upcoming Skype Visits with Kate Messner and Betty Birney on Dec. 3
Next week we will have two Skype visits in one day. Several 2nd grade book clubs will Skype with Kate Messner after reading Marty McGuire.  Third grade book clubs will have a chance to Skype with Betty Birney to talk to her about the Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs and School Days According to Humphrey.  In addition to reading and discussing the author's books. They worked on questions they wanted to ask on the day of the visit.

Stephen McCraine
On Oct. 29th Ms. Anderson's 2nd grade class Skyped with Stephen McCraine author of the Mal and Chad books. During the visit Stephen shared tips for developing a story and drawing accompanying pictures. Ms. Anderson's class asked lots of great questions and Stephen answered them all. Afterwards he sent us a copy the drawing they created together.
