Fall Lesson with Kindergarten

10/21/2013

Fall means it is time to read some of my favorite stories to kindergarten. We started with the Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything and finished with The Teeny Tiny Woman. Both stories have items associated with fall that need to be put back together. Teeny Tiny woman, skeleton and Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything (scarecrow).
After students moved to the table the real fun began. Each student was given a paper with a chart and a bag of bone candy that had different bone parts. Students sorted, counted, and began graphing their candy. We ran over so students were given a baggie to put their candy in to finish in the classroom and to eat later. This was a deliciously good time.

Mo Willems
Kindergarteners are working on a Mo Willems author study. Their introduction to Mo Willems kicked off with a short video of the author and an introduction of his other books. Afterwards I read his newest book Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs. The students loved Mo's humor. Finally they moved to the computer to visit Mo Willem's site and play The Goldilocks and Three Dinosaurs game.

Voki
Fourth grade students are working on learning about the causes and battles of the American Revolution. After summarizing their information they created a Voki to present their information. The students were very excited and loved in ability to customize their avatar.

Skype Visit with Jeanne DuPrau
My 4th grade book club and a book club from Ms. Haile's class had the opportunity to talk to Jeanne DuPrau. She is the author of several books including the City of Ember. Fourth grade students chatted with her about the City of Ember. During the visit they discussed the character development, plot choices and her writing process.
