Veera Hiranandani
The Night Diary
Star Rating: 4 out of 5
Rubric Rating: 22 out of 24
“The Night Diary” takes place when India became two countries (Pakistan and India). Nisha and her family had to leave their home because of this separation. In the beginning of the story Nisha gets a diary. It is a present for her 12th birthday. Every night (pg 17) she writes to her mother that, died when her twin brother and her was born. On their journey they face a lot of challenges getting to the other side of the border.
The originality is fantastic. I’ve never seen any other book with this form of writing. The story is written in letters instead of paragraphs and chapters. In a way this way of writing makes the book feel more alive.
The plot language of this book I would rate higher than 4 if I had the option. This book makes it feel like you are there with Nisha. This book includes a lot of descriptive words. It even describes the small things. It made me want to keep on reading.
I rated it a 22 out of 24 because not every reader is interested in historical fiction. I personally am but some readers aren’t. The organization of this book makes me take off a point. I think if one night ends in Nisha’s diary the next should start on the next page. Since it doesn’t sometimes I got confused with where I was in the book.

The Night Diary Year: 1947
Star rating: 4/5
Rubric Rating: 24/25
“The Night Diary” is a book that follows the life adventures of a 12-year-old girl named Nisha. She has a brother named Amil along with her dad, Papa, and her grandmother, Dadi (Daa-dee).
India is finally free from Brittan, but it is breaking into two countries- Pakistan and India. She is living in the village of Mirpur Khas in present day Pakistan. On the morning of August 17th, 1947 all Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus must separate. With Muslims in Pakistan and Hindus and Sikhs in India. She will go through many perilous journey to get to the country the government says they have to. She is writing in a journal to her diseased mother.
The originality of this book is amazing. I have never seen a book go this deep into this topic many books have tried but I have never seen anyone make a historical fiction book this many descriptive details.
Veera Hiranandi made many scenes in the book have made my heart race, such as the part when the man with the knife was about to cut Nisha’s neck the details were spectacular. The interest was really nice.
The overall, is that the many descriptive details and interest is just magnificent.
I gave this book a rubric rating of 24/25 because the people that don’t like historical fiction will probably get bored because of the slowness of the book.
