water castle 4stars 21/24
Water Castle is a wonderful book, but it does have some flaws. It wasn't always the easiest thing to undetrstand. Water Castle is intriguing, but it was also slow. I think that the idea of three twelve ueaqr olds finding the fountain of youth just for Ephriam's father is incredable. the flashbacks were not needed, I did enjoy them though. I love the suprise ending in wich, well, I can't tell you. Still, I would recomend this book for the mock Newberry.
I agree! You also have a good point!
Love it Julia!
You messed up on the word understand because you said undetrstand.
I think my rating is fine!!!!!!
Good job lulia!Way to go!
4 and 1/2 stars

I have read a book called Water Castle by Megan Frazer Blakemore. I give it 4 and 1/2 stars because it is a slow book. What I mean by that is, it doesn't get straight to the point. I am not a patient person so I would like it get right to the main idea of the story. For example , when it talked about Ephraim trying to find the fountain of youtuh it had to go through every detail of the process. For my rating of the rubric I gave it a 21 because once again , I'm not a patient personso it wasn't so engaging to me. Anyways I would recomend this book to you , and I think this book may get the next Mock New Berry Award.
I love it Kennedy!
I can defently agree with that.
4 and a half stars rating from rubric:20
The Water castle is a great book about a boy named Ephraim who moves to Crystal Springs, Maine after his father suffers a stroke. Ephraim learns about the mythical Fountain of Youth, and really wants to cure his father from the water. Ephraim, Brynn, Mallory, and Will go beneath the Water Castle to find the fountain. Ephraim's real question for you is: Do you believe in the unbelievable? The reason I give it 4 and a half stars is because is takes a long time to get interested into it and i wish it would just get to the point! I also love the originality. The author made a great adventurous text and this may just win the Newberry Award. ~Lillie
I love your review! You have a great vocabulary, too! Nice work!
Nice job Lillie!
Very well stated! I think Ephraim's question about the unbelievable guided the text. The kids wanted to find the cure for their father which was their encouragement to continue to look for the Fountain of Youth.

I loved the book The Water Castle. This book is about three siblings named Price,Ephraim, and Brynn that move to Maine because their father has a stroke. When they get there they hear about a fountain of youth and set out to find it so they can cure their father. As I read it was really hard to get into the book.I sort of liked it, sort of not liked it.This is a reason I chose the star rating. It doesn't make me think of any text-to-text, text-to-self, or text-to-world conections.I think you should read this book because it is really action packed, but I think this book should not get the mock newbery award.
I like how you describe the book.
I like it!
how do yo not like it and like it at the same time?
I gave this book a 2 and a half star rating.
My rating from the rubric is 14 out of 24.
The Appledore family is moving to the small town of Crystal Springs,ME.They want to find the fountain of youth to hopefully save their father who recently had a devastating stroke. After living in the Water Castle for a short time they quickly find out it is a very special house full of surprises and secrets. They find out that the house has a mysterius blue light and secret tunnels and labratories. They also find out that the people in the town are very speiciel, and that may be tied to the fountain of youth.the book takes us on a journey of solving the mystery of the water castle and the town of Crystal Springs.I gave this book a 2 star rating because it developes too slow.
I think that rating is a little low.
I disagree. Even thought it developes slow, doesn't mean it's not a good book.
Conner that is a great great great great great great great response!!!!!!
This responce tells me to not read this book.
The only flaw is: you dont have to rate it 2 stars because of one thing. :)
I agree with conner because I never really hated the book.
Nice job Conner!
Conner why are you replying to your own response?
4 ½ stars
This week I’ve been reading Water Castle by Megan Frazer Blakemore. This book is good but it takes a long to get in. The plot of the book is complex, but is easy to understand. The reason I gave it 41/2 stars is because the story is original, the characters are life like, the setting is lifelike and it is very organize. It also has a good plot and language. The only problem is the interest. It took it a long time to get in the story. One of the main events of the story is when Ephraim’s dad suffers a stroke. The problem ends and is resolved because Ephraim use the Fountain of Youth to save his dad. I can make a connection with this book, when I first moved into my new house all the floor boards were squeaky and scary so whenever I took a step it scared me.
This is a creative and great response Thomas ! I like how you use complex. This response is a great pick and you jave reasonable scoring. That's a little cool how you can connect to the book. Don't you aggree Price is a jerk?
Lillie,i aggree that price is a jerk because he is not very bright. and thomas, you have a great response and i agree with you.
A family’s dad had a stroke and they moved to Crystal Springs.Crystal Springs had water that could cure people.Dr. Appledoor made a huge Water Castle and made many confusing tunnels.Ephriam was looking for the fountain of youth to cure his dad.Several explorers have looked for the fountain of youth but never found it.I liked it at the end SO MUCH because of the very happy ending. At the end his father completely recovered. At first, his dad couldn’t walk, talk,or understand things. At the end,he waved to his dad while his dad was looking out the window and his dad waved back. That wasn’t my favorite part but it was very hard to put the book down when Will got stabbed in the leg by a huge piece of wood!It was a good book and I rated it five stars and twenty four points.I LOVED THE BOOK!
I rated the book 24 points and 5 stars.
I rate this book with 3 stars because it didn’t give a good detail on the Water Castle or the characters unless a big castle is an option for “good detail”. I rate the book with 17 points because most of the story is hard to understand with the bad description of the characters like Ephraim thought she had pretty eyes dark as a walnut on pg. 39. I can’t believe that Brynn’s dad never started walking again. Most stories end better. The story kind of has a good ending because the father could still move but couldn’t walk. He had to be in a wheelchair and have someone push him. One of my favorite parts was when they went inside the Water Castle. They played around and enjoyed looking at the whole place, but what made it confusing was that they went downstairs and ended up UPSTAIRS!!! Doesn’t that seem confusing to you? It does to me. This book is a long read because before the halfway point it is confusing to me. The book is really complex because there are so many settings to remember. I feel sorry for Will because he fainted and he was on the stairs and he would fall all the way down.
And I think it shouldn't get the Newberry Award because it never gave you specific detail from the Water Castle. The plot language was horrible in fact, i don't think it had any at all!
Star rating: 1 ½ stars Rating from rubric: 13 Water Castle is a book about a boy named Ephraim, a boy who is radioactive and seen real Fountain of Youth water. Ephraim meets a boy named Will, the son of Ephraim’s family enemy. Ephraim tries to become friends with Will until Ephraim finds secret tunnels and a lab. Will tries to stop Ephraim from searching anymore. I think that the book is too confusing and not interesting because it constantly goes to these flashbacks in the middle of the story. You have to understand both stories in one book and once you get interested the book is nearly over. Things were never explained like what did Dr. Appledore mean by burning the water? The book just felt incomplete. I don’t think this book should get the Newberry award.
I agree with you roger because i dont know what they ment when Appledore said burn the water.
Stars: 4 and 1/2
Over the past few weeks I have been reading Water Castle. I gave it 4 and 1\2 stars and a 24 for the rubric. I really love this book. I gave it a 4 and 1\2 because it was a little confusing with the flashbacks and it was hard to get into, although it was really hard to put down because it was so exciting. I gave the rubric a 24 because it was really engaging and interesting. Also the organization is really good because, you always know where the flashbacks are and if you didn’t, it would be even more confusing to tell the difference between the flashbacks and the real story! Lastly the characters are awesome and they were not very hard to keep track of like other books because there were not very many characters. Also in this book the characters were very visual to me like Mallory, Will, and Ephraim. So I think The Water Castle should get the Newberry award.
I like your response. The flashbacks are kind of confusing and it was hard to put the book down because it was SO SO GOOD!I liked the charachtars to.Also,do you aggree that Price is a jerk?
16/24 from rubric
The book The Water Castle by Megan Frazer Blakemore is about when Ephraim Appledore Smith’s dad suffers with a strike. Ephraim and his two other siblings move to the Water Castle in Crystal Springs, Maine. Mallory Green and her family have always watched out for the Water Castle. When Ephraim meets Will, who comes from a family that hates the Appledores. There has been a rumor going around for a long time that the fountain of youth(a body of water that will make you live forever) is located in Crystal Springs. Ephraim, Mallory, and Will go on a journey to find the fountain of youth and to heal Ephaim’s father. I only gave this book 2 stars because it was not that interesting and it did not have a lot of action until the end. This book in my opinion should not get the Mock Newberry Award.
The Water Castle *** 21
I think The Water Castle is original but slightly boring. I gave this book a score of twenty-one and three stars. What I like about this book is the setting and organization. The characters did not have a good description and it was a slow read.
There were a few things that I loved about this book such as the setting and the originality. This book is about three kids named Price, Ephraim, and Bryn. They all want to heal their dad from a stroke but they are unsure how to help. In this book, The Water Castle is described perfectly. It said the vines were crawling up the castle walls. In the tunnels it also said that the hard ground was cold and damp. I could imagine everything. I think that the thought of the Fountain of Youth made the whole book a bit better by adding more action. This was very original.
There were three things that I wish were better. Those things were the organization, characters and it was a slow read. I wish that the action had started one fourth of the way in instead of three fourths of the way in. The characters played their role but were not described very well. Sometimes at the end of a chapter a flash back would appear and tell a whole different story about someone you didn’t know yet. This was confusing.
I am glad I read this book but I don’t think it is good enough to get the Newberry Award. This book was slow at first but once I got into it, it was quick and easy.
Very well written! I love the text evidence that you used to describe The Water Castle. I have to agree that the flashbacks were a bit confusing. The flashbacks added additional characters which made it difficult to follow. Overall, I thought The Water Castle was a good book.
I think that the Water Castle should get the Mock Newberry award. Because it has good language! For example Ephraim described the Water Castle on pg.9 ‘Ivy ran up the walls of the building and dripped down over the doorway, a round stone outcropping that protected the wooden door.’ Wow! I also think that the flashbacks help the story flow better. For instant I could infer that Nora was in Mallory’s family later in book and that Nora was the girl in the old picture. This why I think it should earn the award!
The Water Castle
3 and a half stars
Rating from rubric: 21/24
I don’t think this book should win the Newberry Award. This book was about the Appledore-Smith family. Ephraim, Price, and Brynn are the kids. The father is in the hospital because he had a stroke. Ephraim was smart, until he went to Crystal Springs middle school. Starting on page 225, he found water from the Fountain of Youth that can cure his dad. He drunk some water and he made his father drink some. Later on in the book, Ephraim fell down the stairs with Will, a friend. Will gets injured, but Ephraim doesn’t. Wow! The water saved him! Another day, Ephraim waved to his father and the father waved back, but he fully wasn’t cured. I think this book shouldn’t the Newberry Award because ¾ of the book was slow and boring. Like the part when they were moving. Who wants to read that? There was no action or humor. It was dull. That is why I gave this book a 3 in interest. That was also the reason the 5 stars went to 4 stars. Another problem was the organization. The problem with that were the flashbacks. It switched from the present to the past and it continued like that. That is why I gave it a 2 in organization and 4 stars to 2 and a half. The setting, which was the water castle, was describe well and made the story exiting. For an example, the secret passage that leads to the water was action packed. For the description, the castle hummed and glowed. Another example is that each door had its own sound which made a symphony. I can imagine that. There was a few ways it could have been better, like the organization, but other than that, it was great.
4stars and 20 from rubric The Water Castle was an okay book but it was really boring and held no interest.
The things I liked about the Water Castle was the language ,organization , charecters ,and setting. The language has lots of voice. For example on page 74 it says “He crossed the dirt road ,kicking stones out of the way ,and climbed the stairs to the room above the garage.. I like how this sentence is very descriptive like many other sentences in the book .The charecters and the setting were also very descriptive. For instance in a sentence about the library it says “ There were two windows on the far wall, both covered with heavy velvet drapes, that made the library dim and dreary as a monstery. In addition to that about Mallory it says “Ephraim thought she had pretty eyes, dark as walnut, but she was mocking him, he knew. ”I liked this sentence because it described deeply how Mallory’s eyes looked.
-The only parts I really did not like were the flashbacks and that is was boring. For example the flashbacks in the book are really boring because it only has facts really.
Overall I think the book could of gotten the book if it held your intrest. I think this book should not get the Newberry award.
3 ½ stars
20 ½ rating from rubric
I think the book Water Castle by Megan Frazer Blakemore shouldn’t get the Mock Newberry award. I like this book because it gives a lot of interest and wonder about what is happen but the book reads really slow. This book is about 3 children Ephraim, Price, and Brynn. Their father has had several strokes throughout his life, but this one isn’t healing like the others have. The family has to move to Crystal Springs, Maine in search for a doctor but while they do they have to stay in a house called the Water Castle . This house is very mysterious because of all its secret passages and rooms. Ephraim on the other hand, is looking for a new cure that he thinks he might have found . It is called the Fountain of Youth. Will he find it? Find out in the Water Castle.
I gave this book 3 ½ stars because the organization was confusing. In parts of the book it flashed back to the 1900s and I thought the book would have read smother. For the rating from rubric I gave it 20 ½ because of its intrest I wish it read a little faster not just because of the flash backs but if the begging went faster it might have a bit more clarity. Other than that I enjoyed this book and I hope you do too.

The book Water Castle is a slow book with not much excitement but has a very interesting story board. Water Castle has a lower score with me because it is a slow read and takes a while to figure out the plot. But I gave it 4 stars because once you figure out the plot it starts to get interesting, right around the half-way point. Although the book is very developed I might not recommend it for the Newbury.
Water Castle *** stars Rating from Rubric 21/24
In the book Water Castle by Megan Frazer Blakemore the Fountain of Youth comes alive. Three kids named Will, Mallory, and Ephraim find a secret lab, go through mysterious tunnels, and witness happy and sad moments. I gave this book three stars because when I got to the halfway point the action started. I also gave this book three stars because when I first started reading it was not engaging. That really annoyed me. The flashbacks were also very confusing they just left you hanging. I think this book really shouldn’t get the Mock New berry Award.
