Then in Part 4, they all end up in New York in the same orchestra. I gave this book 4 starts because I like how its all tied together in the end. On the rubric, the lowest score I gave it was on organization because it was confusing because each part was a different story. Overall, I really enjoyed this book!

Echo is a stunning book. I think the way the author made four different stories in one book was very creative. I also admire how in the very end the author ties up the whole story by making them all meet each other. In the book the author makes it so as every time a new story begins there is a cleft hanger for the last story. I enjoyed how the author doesn't give you the characteristics of each character. For example, in the third story you have to keep reading to figure out what Ivy is like. The setting flows well with each story. All the characters seem very determined and brave. I can tell through dialogue of other characters and how they speak to each other. For instance, in the first story Friedrich is very determined to get his father out of jail. I know this because in the book the author makes you feel as if you are right there on the journey with them. I gave this book a 24/24 because of how well it was written. I would recommend this book to someone else.

Echo 5 stars 24/24 points “Echo”, a novel by Pam Muñoz Ryan, is an exemplary book. It is 4 stories of 4 music-loving children linked together by a harmonica. They are each experiencing World War II. Friedrich is in the middle of pain, hurt, and a father in Dachau. Mike is facing getting his brother adopted when his mom and grandma die. Ivy, still on the move, is facing standing up for what she believes in when the Japanese are being treated badly. The reason I gave “Echo” 5 stars is its amazing plot language that added to the great story. For example, “It was dim and cave-like,” from Mike’s story and “The ward house looked as if it belonged in a story-book instead of an orange grove,” from Ivy’s story. I have read “Esperanza Rising,” also by Pam Muñoz Ryan and a text-to-text connection that I have is that it uses the same kind of amazing language.
