Firefly Hollow 3 stars 21/24
I gave the book 3 stars because I enjoyed the text, but the plot was not very original. I say this because book has descriptive details, though many authors write about animals that can talk and interact with humans. I like how the book is easy to read and it explains things while intertwined with what’s happening in the story. For example, when Firefly and Cricket were asking Vole about Kindred spirits, they were thinking about Peter, but after Vole’s definition of “Someone who understands your deepest dream.” They realized that they each had three. So the readers that didn’t know what a kindred spirit was, were explained the definition while reading the book. Another reason I gave Firefly Hollow three stars is how the book has a voice, but the setting will occasionally falter, and the reader will not understand a part of the book because the setting is not explained. So I think that that places the book in between 5 and 1 since it’s not horrid, but it’s not stupendous. That is why I think that Firefly Hollow is only an average book.
Firefly Hollow 3 stars 20/24 points
I give “Firefly Hollow,” by Alison Mcghee and Christopher Denise, 3 stars and 20/24 points. In the book, the main characters are “Firefly” the firefly and “Cricket” the cricket. Neither one of them fits in at their two nations and are constantly warned to stay away from Peter the “miniature giant”. However, one day, they wander off beyond the river that separates their two nations from the giants’ house. After a somewhat frightening conversation, they befriend Peter. They spend the rest of the summer practicing each of their skills and building a getaway raft. Sadly, one fateful day, summer ends and Peter has to go to school despite his pleas. He befriends Jack, his new neighbor, and unintentially forgets Cricket and Firefly. The two decide to leave their past behind. They sail away from Firefly Hollow.
This book exhibited a quality amount of plot language. 1 example is: “She flitted through the clearing in the hollow tree straight into the clearing and straight back again.”(Page 1) Another is: “She, as a one-centimeter-round baby, long before it was time to learn how to fly, rolled right out of her spiderweb hammock and flung herself off the edge of her cubby.”(Page 2) Symbolism was used in the story: “After crickets die, we turn into music” he said.”(Page 172) Also, “When fireflies get very old, we turn into stars” she said” 172)
The book’s organization made sense. As seen in the summary, the book flows from beginning to end.
In most books, the antagonist(s) are proven wrong. An interesting thing about “Firefly Hollow” is that, instead, the antagonists (the elders) were correct; Peter did forget about them.
An example of setting from the book is “The night air outside the hollow tree was cool, and the air inside was warm.”(Page 1)
The characters in the story were pretty easy to interpret and understand. For instance, I could tell that Firefly easily got annoyed and angry
Despite its acceptable language, organization, interest, setting, and characters, “Firefly Hollow’s” story itself wasn’t very good. Many people have written about bugs and many have been written on the topic. This makes me think that the book is not very original. This is why I give “Firefly Hollow” only 3 stars and 20/24 points.
Book: Firefly Hollow
Rubric rating: 24/24
Star rating: 5 stars
Firefly Hollow was very interesting. It was interesting when Cricket and Firefly were talking to Peter, especially when they said, “Are you planning to kill us and eat us?”(pg.78) It was also interesting when Cricket ran away. On page 99 it says, “And he kept going, right out of the school.”
Firefly hollow also has cool settings. I like Vole’s boat because the book says it has a, “cozy living room,” (pg.129) and a “polished bronze handrail.” (pg.129) I also like the “giant’s” house.
The characters in Firefly hollow are amazing. I like Firefly because she’s persistent. The book says, “The air up here was so thin, and she was getting so tired.” (pg.240) But she kept on going! I also like Cricket because he’s creative. On page 47 it says, “He brought his wings together and sang, “Take me out to the ball game. Take me out to the crowd.””
I thought Firefly Hollow was very original. I haven’t read a book with insects as the main characters. I also have not seen a chapter book with
I gave Firefly Hollow a 5 star rating because in the end, everyone is happy. I gave it a 24/ 24 rubric rating because I could understand all the words. It was also organized, which made it more interesting. The setting was relevant and enhances the story, as does the characters. And finally, this book was original and fresh.
Firefly Hollow 4 stars 18/24
In the beginning of the book, Firefly and Cricket don’t fit in the group and Cricket wants to go to meet Peter and Firefly want’s to fly to the moon. Both of them think that Peter is not mean but, their teacher Says to everyone “ DON’T GO NEAR A GIANT,” When they both go near the giant Peter. When he was talking he was very gentle. When Firefly and Cricket overheard Peter and Charlie singing “Take me out to the ball game take me out to the crowd buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks…” After they heard them he started to sing it to and Peter was devastated because he moved away. When Peter told his mom and dad that he does not need to go to school because he has Firefly and Cricket but their dad is arguing that he should grow out of having “ Imaginary friend,”even though he even had and imaginary friend. Then a while later Jack (this new kid moved in the neighborhood) moved in and Peter was scared to talk to him. After all the practicing he has done he went for it he tried to visit the moon. Then “BOOM” he fell. She fell faster than a cheetah. All the firefly’s came running everyone was asking “Is he okay.” Then Vole picked up Firefly then Firefly started to sing “Take me to the ball game take me out to the crowd” Then he woke up. I give this book a 18/24 one the rubric because there was not any thick and juicy words plus that would make it more interesting. I give it a 4 stars
Firefly Hollow 4 ½ STARS 23/28 points
I think Firefly Hollow was a pretty good book. It was interesting especially when Firefly was falling through the sky, unconscious. My favorite part was when Cricket caught Firefly as she was falling through the sky. I also liked when Vole set sail for adventure. If I was a regular cricket/firefly I would shudder every time I came near the Museum of Giant Artifacts. I think the museum would have lots of dangerous things for small bugs like a jar. I can’t get Firefly’s sadness when Elder dies out of my head.
Firefly Hollow 3 stars 20/24 rubric rating
Firefly Hollow is about a firefly who wants to fly to the moon, and a cricket who wants to be a baseball player. They meet a boy named Peter who helps them achieve their dreams. This is why I this book a 3 star rating and a 20/24 rubric rating. First let’s start with the interest. This book was not very interesting. There was not a big major event it was broken down in small pieces for instance “Cricket had held out his wings to Firefly falling from the sky, he had caught her.” That was a small major event. The setting was somewhat good. This is because most of the book took place in Peter’s yard. This event took place in Peter’s yard “He began tossing Cricket stones. Also on pg. 153 there is a picture of Cricket in Peters’s yard. The characters were great. Firefly was a firefly with attitude. On pg. 150 she said “Are you nuts!” Cricket is more and soft and confused. On pg. 147 Cricket just said “Because.” Firefly had to complete the sentence for him. The originality was great. I have never seen a chapter book with talking bugs in it with one who wants to fly to the moon and the other wants to be a baseball player. This is why I gave this book a 3 star rating and 20/24 rubric rating.

Firefly Hollow is an amazing book that I would most definitely recommend to a friend to a family member or a friend this book had characters that were impossible to forget (Firefly, Cricket, Vole, and Peter). This had great and frequent language, which resulted in me being unable to put it down. One descriptive part of the book was, “This was an old boat. Firefly could tell from the parched feel of the paper. Also a descriptive part was the beginning of the book when the setting was being told. Firefly Hollow had more than enough respect to my reading and interest level. This book was mostly original; if you read the plot alone than this would be nowhere close to being original, but when you put all the details in then this would be one of the first books of its kind. Firefly Hollow had lots of organization hidden under its text; I could really understand the literature. I can relate to Cricket and Firefly because they have been told to stay away from the “giants” but they didn’t obey they people that told them that, and I have been told not to interact with stranger and yet I have made friends with them, which means technically they’re not strangers to me anymore.
All in all, Firefly Hollow is a fantastic book than will or be a runner up for the Newberry Award
Firefly Hollow 23/24 rubric rating 4 ½ stars
Firefly Hollow is about a firefly and cricket going near the giants or in other words the humans. I think Firefly Hollow is organized is because in page 203 it said, “What do they do in Giant School?” It sort of gives me a hint of what that chapter is about it is about. Firefly Hollow is interesting because in page 259 when it said, “Don’t be dead.” he cried, “Please, Firefly, don’t be dead.” I was so scared Firefly was going to die. I don’t think the setting is that descriptive because in page 12 it said, “By the lowest branch of the white pine.” I think it could have had a little more details. The characters are very developed because in page 12 it said, “Imagine flying up that high,” said firefly.” That tells me that firefly wants to fly up that high. This is why I rated Firefly Hollow a 23/24 rubric rating and 4 ½ stars.
Firefly Hollow 5 stars 23/24 points
Have you ever heard of the book Firefly Hollow? It is a great book. I rated this book five stars and 23/24 points. In this book there is a firefly who wants to fly to the moon and a cricket who wants to play baseball. There family and friends think they are crazy and weird. In school, giants are supposed to be feared and far away from. But Firefly and Cricket do not think the miniature giant is so bad. On the other hand, Peter is in sadness as he lost his best friend until he meets Cricket and Firefly. His dad thinks that Firefly and Cricket are not real, but they are real. The River Vole there is. He is very lonely until he meets Firefly and Cricket. Read this book to find out the great adventures and friendship they will have.
This book interested me a lot. On pg. 249, when Firefly was about to fall, I was so into the book. The characters in this book were good. I liked the character Vole because he was nice to let Firefly and Cricket stay on pg.135. The settings were great. The setting of Vole’s boat would make you understand how lonely the Vole was. Lastly, the plot language was ok. It was hard to put the book down at times but sometimes it was not that good. When Cricket was in school it was not that interesting but when he caught Firefly I was so into the book. Over all, I liked this book.
As you can see, Firefly Hollow is a wonderful book. This is why I rated this book five stars and 23/24 points.

Are you ready to read a fantastic book? Well then I recommend FIREFLY HOLLOW. In this book you can see how friendship can be formed no matter what you are. This book has Cricket, Firefly, and Peter. This book has great character description making you feel like you are in front of the character when the character is speaking. As evidence, ‘’She reared back on her hind legs and waved an arm in the air to emphasize her point, which was that the world was a dangerous place.’’(page 21) This book also has good description of the setting. For proof, ‘’The sky glowed with the light from a thousand stars.’’(page 37 ) This book also has great interest. Evidence from the text is, ‘’The getaway raft was gone. Charlie was gone. But Firefly was alive.’’(page 265) Those sentences sounded dramatic in my head. This book also had great plot language because… The text stated, ‘’They spent the day working. Peter on the raft, Firefly on her upward zooms and Cricket on fluff catching.’’(page 165) This is why I gave this book 5 stars and a 24 rubric rating. Be sure to read FIREFLY HOLLOW.
