Half a Chance
This book is a good book. The main event is Lucy is trying to win a photo contest. If she does then she gets $500.I have never read a book like this. The setting in this book was confusing. There were too many settings .I gave it five stars because it was good except for the setting.
Half a Chance
21/24HALF A CHANCE I thought the book HALF A CHANCE was a great book. It had great text and I was always interested. I was especially interested in her descriptive language, like how she described the kayak and how she felt like she was tipping over. I loved the part when she was deciding to or to not use Grandma Lila’s photo in the contest she was doing, like she knew she was doing something wrong. I thought it was a really good book and that you should read it. I couldn’t put it down and neither would you.
I felt the exact same way!
HALF A CHANCE
If you have ever read ‘Half a Chance’, I think you will like it. It is about a girl named Lucy who is trying to win in a photograph contest. But, it’s not actually that easy when you have to deal with friendship problems while calming an old woman. I gave it four stars and 23/24 because the concept is not that original. In the book when Lucy saved the drowning moth, she thought ‘half a chance is better than no chance at all’. It is like that in my life when everything has half a chance. All in all, I think it was a great book.
Half a Chance
4 1/2 stars
I gave Half a Chance a 4 ½ star rating because it engaged me when I was reading it, making it hard to put down. I noticed that several times I read way past 20 min. when reading for my reading log. There were only a couple of times when the text didn’t make sense to me or the setting didn’t affect the mood of the story which is why I gave this book a 22/24 rubric rating. This book is about a girl named Lucy who enters a photography contest in hopes of buying her friend’s grandmother a motorized boat. She a does this because they live out on the lake and some loons built a nest there. The grandmother is too old to get in a kayak, so she needs a motorized boat to see the loons.

My book club book was “Half A Chance’’ by Cynthia Lord. It was an amazing book. It has a lot of descriptive language. It was like the pictures were right in front of you and you could feel it. The setting and organization was really good. Sometimes when you read it you don’t know where they are, but it is easy to find it again. I understand everything perfectly. I didn’t have any trouble with anything. In the book the characters feel memorable. It feels like they’re your best friends and they have know you since a baby. Lucy and Nate are the main characters. They always do things together because Lucy just moved to New Hampshire. This book really interested me because I like doing team word and doing fun stuff. This gave you fresh and great details. I really liked this book! I hope you like it too!
I loved the book too.
I thought that Half a Chance was a really great book .It reminded me of a student in my class named Nate just like Lucy, the main character’s friend. Also when Lucy’s mother told her that Grandma Lilah their neighbor, had memory problems , that reminded me an elderly women who had memory issues, too. Also, even though I have no connection I liked the part when Lucy got Grandma Lilah (G .L) a Paton boat. Also the reason why I rated this book 22/24 is because of the characters and organization. Characters got ¾ because while I was reading I sometimes got Megan and Morgan messed up. Also organization got ¾ because it didn’t make sense that G.L could remember that she went on a hike years ago, but not how her cup looks. I rated this book 4/5 because I think this book is really good but some character and organization changes could make it better. But it was amazing and I hope you liked it too!
I really agree that it was sort of confusing. Like it went to 1 setting then another. But I thought just because of 1 or 2 little things its okay.
Half a Chance
I think the book Half a Chance, by Cynthia Lord is an awesome book! The plot language was very descriptive. For example, white with blue shutters, the Lakeview Gift Shop had no view of the lake, just of Pizza Junction across the street. The book was also very organized. I loved how each chapter title was one of the contest words. This book was so interesting I just couldn’t put it down. I loved how the characters were life-like, so I could really picture them in my head. The loons played a big part in the book, and I thought that was very original, although it started out like most other stories (new girl in town).
I love your details. Yours is so interesting!

It was very original, but you know every kid moves into a new house in a new state or country. Cynthia Lord chose to write a great book not a good book. I LOVED the loon the loon patrol she did not need to include that but it really moves the story along. The thing is the photo contest how she didn’t win. It was so nice of her to rent the boat for Grandma Lilah. Every story needs some sadness and in Half a Chance Cynthia Lord really showed that. Like with Grandma Lilah and the poor baby loon getting captured. One thing I didn’t like was that they were here they were there nothing to say the car ride or anything. Although in one part it did say how the car ride was with Megan and Grandma Lilah. Interest was a HUGE thing and this really caught my eye how every chapter was the name of a photo entry. Over all best book I ever READ!
I totally agree that it was really nice to rent a boat for grandma Lilah!!
Half a Chance
I like how each chapter was one of the contest pictures. The way each time she took a picture it told you how she set the picture up. It really caught my interest by going slow at first and then speeds up at the end. Lucy was really descriptive about how she set up the rock candy. I loved the setting because I’ve been to a lake and it is very beautiful. She said the first she went kayaking when she went with them to go do the Loon Patrol. The characters are very special how the author, Cynthia Lord, made it. She made sure to add what they love to do, why they do it, and how they do it. The book was very original. It really caught my eye on how good this book was. I have never read a book this good and this descriptive and is the same as this book except this book. It was really good.
I love your response. I agree that the characters are special and all played a role
Half A Chance 5 stars 24/24
The plot language was really like someone was talking to you. I loved the taste of the talk. It had sass, mad, sad, and love. The organization was great. Something I liked was that it talked about something for the next 11 pages. Then it changed. The interest was big. I couldn’t put the book down. It also had great descriptive details. The chapter names were cool because they were named after the words on the picture list. The setting was sort of confusing. Like she was here then she was there, but most of the places were named. I liked in the grocery store Grandma Lilah was scared and did not know the way out. I LOVED the characters. I loved Nate,Megan,Emily,Lucy, the Loons, dad, mom, and of course Grandma Lilah. I think the originality of this book is OK. The only reason why is because Wonder and Absolutely Almost are like the same. After a little while it changed and the originalitly fresh.
Star rating: 5 Title: Half a Chance Rating: 23/24
In the story Half a Chance Lucy has just moved away from her friends to live in a new house. She meets someone she doesn’t like that is trying to take away Lucy’s new friend Nate. For the originality of the book I gave it a 3 because the first thing that happens is that she moves. This happens in a lot of books. As the story goes on it starts to change. Lucy tries to enter a contest that her dad is in charge of. It is a picture contest and Lucy is good at taking pictures. This makes the book very original. The interest of the book makes you want to read on. You will want to find out what will happen to the loons. In the book you will also want to find out if Lucy will win the contest. So I would give interest a 4. I would give the plot and language a 4. It has a good plot for this book. The language is nice and clear, so if someone starts talking they are talking correctly. For the organization I would give it a 4. It is very well organized. For example Lucy doesn’t just end up at the store. In the book it says “As soon as I stopped, the kayak began turning gently to a different view, like it had its own plan.” So over all it was a very good book and a nice book to relate to.
I do agree that it was a great book to read. Good response.
Book: Half a Chance Rating from rubric: 23/24 Star rating: 5
Half a Chance by Cynthia Lord is a simply fantastic novel. First of all, it has a well-thought plot and fantastic descriptions. The major events in the story such as the photo contest and loon patrol are extremely well developed plot. An example of phenomenal language is” Between the yard and the lake there were thousands of smooth, soft, colored rocks: white, gray, rust, yellow and tan. They crunched under my feet sounding like marbles rubbing together or scrabble pieces as you mix them up.”
Half a Chance also has incredible organization. The ideas flow nicely together, enhancing the plot. The chapters were each a word on the photo list like three feet, hope or lost. The major events like the photo contest were not just launched in there. They were melted in like chocolate chips in pancakes.
In addition to all those great qualities, the setting really shaped the story. Things like loon patrol and climbing Cherry Peak couldn’t have happened unless there was a lake in front of mountain.
Furthermore, Half a Chance is a book that kept my interest all the way through. I could not put the book down. Seriously, I had to read it all at once. It was really considerate of my reading level and it is a really good read.
The story is very original for the most part. In the beginning, it was like a lot like other books, moving, but then the author transformed it into a completely original concept, nothing like anything else I have ever read.
Half a Chance has amazing well-described characters. Meghan, Lucy, Nate and Grandma Lilah all are still in my brain, they are simply unforgettable. They all played a unique role; they weren’t there just to be there. An example of an amazing character description is” Nate smiled, the freckles rising above his nose. There was a slight gap in between his two front teeth, which made his face look quirky- a good quirky.
