5 stars
24 points from rubric
I loved the book! The main events in the book were that Jack's mom died and he goes to a boarding school in Maine. There he meets a weird kid named Early.Early insists that his brother Fisher that went to the army and everyone else said died is alive. He finds himself going on a quest with Early to find Early's brother Fisher. The reason I gave the book 5 stars is becauseit is very descriptive when describing the setting. For example, when it decribed the cottage it said,a wooden shack in the middle of nowhere that looked like it was abondend. In addition to that when I read the book I felt like I was in their world.Like I was living their life. When I read the book I didn't want to put it down.I have never quite read a book like this. Also it is very organized and is really good. You should really read this book.It is that good.

I think you are overestimating the book because the story wasn't original or intresting. Also check your grammer.

It says who everyone else says is dead is alive.I meant to say dead. Also it means everyone else thinks he is dead but Early belives he is alive

Why did you rate a book 5 stars??

3 1/2 Stars Rating from rubric:20 Navigating Early is a book about a charcter called Jack.Jack meets a kid called Early.Early is a strange kid who lines up jellybeans and reads pi as a story. One day they leave to go find a bear and find Fisher,Early's long lost brother. It is very hard to get interested in the story because they start their adventure halfway into the book. The story also isn't original.Characters finding an item or a thing isn't original.I do like their lifelike characters. For example, when they met the pirates you can clearly see their emotion. The forest setting is also great and it adds more danger. For example, when they crossed the river they had to go on logs, making it more exciting.Overall the book is great but it needs to work on a few things.

The book Navagating Early by Clare Vaderpool is about when Jack Bakers mom dies at they end of World War 2 and Jacks father is in the war. Jack gets placed in a boys boarding school in Maine. When Jack meets Early,a strange boy who reads the number PI as a never ending story. When everybody goes away for sping break and Jacks father can not make it, Early asks Jack if he would go on a journey to find PI and Early's long lost brother Fisher, they get themselves in trouble and hope to get themselves back home alive! I only gave this book 3 stars because it had some really sad parts. The setting of this book was sometimes confusing like when they're in the cave and then there by the cliff.Otherwise this was a really fun and exsiting book. Onestly in my opinion I think Navagating Early should get the mock Newberry award.

4 stars
Rubric rating 23/24

In this book by Clare Vanderpool a boy named Early and Jack go on a journey to find Early’s missing brother, Fisher. Early thinks that the number Pi has a story to it and that it will help him find his brother. I like this book because it has everything; action, adventure, and humor. I rated it only four stars because in the book Jack’s dad is a soldier. When they talk about his dad all the Army talk to me was confusing. Everything else is great! That is why I think this book should get the Newbery Award.

I think Navigating Early is really engaging, but I took off some points for setting and organization .I gave this book a score of 22 and 4 and a half stars. What I like about this book is the plot, action ,and characters but unfortunately I did not like the organization and setting .I think these two things needed improvement.
There were a few things that I loved about this book such as the plot, action, and the characters that were well developed .In this book there are two boys named Early and Jack who have an amazing quest to find the Appalachian bear. During their quest they meet pirates, an ancient lady, and an outfitter named Gunner. This book makes the characters come to life. Early and Jack face rattlesnakes, bears, deadly waterfalls, and thirsty blood hounds.
There were two things that I wish were a bit better. Those two things were setting and organization. “The woods were wet and mucky.” That was how the author described the forest. I would have liked more detail because I have woods in my backyard and I like to play in them. I wanted to know what was different from the woods in Massachusetts to the woods in my back yard. The organization was a bit confusing because every few chapters it would switch from Pi’s story, a story that Early created from the numbers of Pi, to Navigating Early. This made it hard for me to understand because I could not remember some parts.
I would recommend this book. I think the theme of this book is friendship because on their journey Early and Jack learn each other’s likes and dislikes, beliefs and disbeliefs. I think this theme is really engaging. I’m glad I read this book.
