Special Programs
Gwin Oaks hosts several Media Center programs to encourage reading and the use of technology.
READING PROGRAMS To receive information on the time frames of any items listed below please see Mrs. Amolo in the media center.
1. Yearly Reading Theme. Students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes each night. Each week they turn in their reading logs and the data is recorded by the media center. Students who turn in turn in their logs each week are invited to the end of the year Reading Celebration.
2. Student Book Reviews. Students can write reviews of books they enjoyed and post them on the Media Catalog. The reviews will be viewable by all Gwinnett County schools.
3. Book Fair. Gwin Oaks hosts two Book Fairs-one in the Fall (September) and one in the Spring (March).
4. Sibling Sack. Students who have a new brother or sister will receive a two books; one for them and one for their new sibling. Also included in the bag are a bookmark and a pamplet on the importance of reading to young children.
5. Skype author visits. This year students at Gwin Oaks will have the opportunity to speak with authors after completing their book club books. Visits will occur monthly in the Media Center.
6. Author/Illustrator Visits. Each year Gwin Oaks host an author/illustrator. The author visits are sponsored by the Gwin Oaks PTA. In the past we have hosted Deborah Wiles, Pam Alexander, Diane Z. Shore, Chris Rumble, Carmen Deedy, Gail Karowski, Michael White, Nina Laden, Barbara Robinson, and so many more.
7. Maker Club. Makers Club is a new club offered to 3rd and 4th graders during their lunch and outside time.
8. Book Clubs. The Media Center hosts 3 book clubs. All book club discuss the books and Skype with authors.
*The Cover 2 Cover Book Club. Students meet weekly during lunch and outside time. In the spring the book club participates in the Gwinnett Readers Rally.
*The Page Turners Book Club is a partnership with the public library and Don Giacomini. Third grade students meet once a month during lunch to discuss books.
TECHNOLOGY
7. STEAM Night. Each year Gwin Oaks hosts a STEAM Night. During STEAM Night different presentations related to science, technology, engineering, art, or math will be offered to students. It is a great way for students to see how the curriculum they are learning now applies to a broader context. Students have also worked hard on their own technology projects and these will also be showcased on STEAM Night.
8. Broadcast Club. Each day a morning news show is produced for G.O.E.S. News. Fifth grade students produce the show. Click on the photo gallery to see pictures of the broadcast studio. Click here to see past new shows
9. Watch It, Read It. Each day book trailers are shown on the morning announcements. New and exciting books (as well as some older books) are shared with students. It is always exciting to see students request books featured on the Watch It, Read It segment.
